How does lung cancer spread to the hip? | |
Dad had part of his lung removed when they found a tumor. Now, 6 months later, they say some cancerous cells have moved to his hip, and begun to grow on the bone.
How can this happen?
Answers:
1Any cancer spreads by 3 routes- blood, direct invasion & through lymph. Here blood-borne route seems possible. Also, if the tumor would've crossed the diaphragm (a band of muscles separating lungs from the abdomen) it can reach a muscle called the iliopsoas, which connects the lower vertebral column to the thigh bone that forms the hip joint (greater trochanter of femur). This is another route I can think of. If the spread is lymphatic, generally there'd be enlarged lymph nodes.
