Is lung cancer the leading cancer killer in the United States?

According to a recent article : Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in the United States, causing more deaths each year than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined. At the same time, people seem to view the disease differently.
"When you look at National Institutes of Health research dollars spent per diagnosis and per patient death, lung cancer is woefully below breast cancer and AIDS," he added.
"Historically, lung cancer has been stigmatized," explained Dr. Corey Langer, medical director of thoracic oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center, in Philadelphia. "It's viewed as a self-inflected illness and, at least partially, it is."

1Good question and a good point. Of course AIDS is the disease DE hour so of course its going to get all the money and breast cancer supporters have really hit it big in the public relations and more power to them but you are right the funding for lung cancer is inadequate compared to these 2. However, I did hear one doctor talking about this very thing, referring to the funding of breast cancer to others, and he said that a lot of new meds come from people trying to find cures for another disease and he believed that the more research in any field of cancer research the better.
