is it necessary or recommended to give an extremely late stage patient a blood transfusion to address anemia?
my father has extremely late stage gall bladder cancer (no more than a week or two to live at most) and is currently in the hospital recovering (i use this term loosely) from surgery. he is relatively peaceful right now (thanks to a lot of medication) and is very near the end. we are preparing to move him into a hospice situation in about 3 days. his oncologist says he is very anemic and would like to give him a blood transfusion. my father has a living will and a medical directive stating not to prolong his life in a terminal case like this including tpo, cpr, etc. i guess my question is; is this necessary? one more poke and prod which he has always hated. i don’t know if we are making him less comfortable by not doing the transfusion
